The Bramhope Bowling Club

Back to our home page

A bowls club existed in Bramhope on the present site as part of the Craven Institute facilities between the two world wars but its use ceased during the 1939-1945 period due to lack of use and maintenance. After the war the green became partly a lawn and a small allotment. A marquee was erected on it annually for many years to support the Royal British Legion's annual Flower Show. Lawn sports were a feature of the Flower Show entertainment. Whilst preparing for the 1984 show, it was noticed how well the lawn drained during a particularly bad spell of rain and it was realised that the lawn may well have been a bowling green.

In 1985 the Robert Craven Bowling Club was formed with the financial help of the Sports Council, the Parish Council, a local trust and from Robert Craven Hall funds. The bowling green was reconsituted under the direction of Joe Maiden, then in charge of Golden Acre Park, to whom we owe a great debt.

This year we renamed ourselves the Bramhope Bowls Club, which is administered by a committee elected by its membership, and controls its own finance. The club organises bowls for the mixed membership between other clubs in the triangle between Addingham, Huby and Burley (Leeds) involving a home and away fixture on a friendly competitive basis. Members play one another at times to suit themselves or in club organised fixtures. The end of the season tournaments resulted in cups being presented on Finals Day to the winners of Mixed Doubles, Ladies, Men's and the Over60's competitions.

The AGM is held in March and new members would be welcome. Contact 0113 267 7600 re membership please.

The photos were taken when, unusually, the green was not in use.
