Bramhope Village Players
Our last production was:
84
Charing Cross Road
by Helen Hanff
The action of the play is set in the New York apartment of Miss Hanff and in
Marks & Co. Booksellers, 84 Charing Cross Road, London. The play is based
on “84 Charing Cross Road” by Helene Hanff, and spans the years
1949 to 1971.
Tonight’s play is based on a true story. In 1949 a struggling American
script writer starts a correspondence with the chief buyer and staff of an antiquarian
bookshop in Charing Cross Road London. The writer, Helene Hanff, whose college
education was cut short by lack of funding during the depression, aims to improve
her mind by ordering a selection of second hand books, unobtainable in New York,
from the bookshop whose advertisement she has seen in the New York Times.
