Bramhope Village Players
Our next production will be part of the Bramhope 2008 festival and we will be presenting:
Under
Milk Wood
A radio play by Dylan Thomas
Tonight’s performance is a brave new venture for Bramhope Village Players. Under Milk Wood, a play for voices was not completed until a month before Dylan Thomas’ death in New York in November 1953. He had, however, been working intermittently on the play for nearly ten years. Although Thomas achieved fame before his premature death, his star status was greatly enhanced posthumously with the success of Under Milk Wood.
The first reading of the play, though not then complete, was in New York in May 1953, Thomas himself taking the parts of the First Voice and the Rev Eli Jenkins. As soon as he returned to Britain, the BBC commissioned him to complete the work and this he did by the end of October 1953. The first broadcast of the whole work, with a distinguished Welsh cast was given in January 1954.
The setting of tonight’s reading is quite unique and will, we hope, create a memorable evening’s entertainment. Evocative of the many Welsh chapels of Dylan Thomas’ day, the Bramhope Puritan Chapel built in 1649 by the Dyneley family and still retaining its box pews is a fitting place for the reading.
